Modern aesthetics have privileged the relation between the artwork and the beholder and the ways in which the sensuous encounter with artistic form produces an aesthetic experience in the recipient. With the social turn in the arts over the latest decades and the increasing interest in collective production and participative forms of reception, there is a need to rethink the traditional aesthetic paradigm and more systematically include the role and function of communality in aesthetic experience. As a contribution to this reorientation, this lecture will present a reassessment of Hannah Arendt’s political thinking and Merleau-Ponty’s aesthetic reflections to emphasise the aesthetic dimension of politics.
